Michael 'DIY' Donahue vs. Ikea chair – The Commercial Appeal

IKEA representatives said it would take the average adult 15 minutes to build the Poang chair, but Michael Donahue isn’t average. Watch this time-lapse to see how long it takes him. Mike Brown/The Commercial Appeal

My initials aren’t “DIY” when it comes to building things.

I’ve never put anything together as far as a lawnmower or a Weed Eater. I once paid somebody at a store to put together a pet cage for me after they assured me I could do it myself. It took them about three minutes while I stood by watching them intently as if I’d really know how to do it the next time.

So when I was asked to assemble a chair from Ikea, I was a bit apprehensive. It looked simple enough — sort of: a lawn chair with a cloth seat and a cushion to add after the chair was assembled.

According to the 11 pages of instructions, it was going to take 15 minutes to put the chair together.

It only took me over an hour. And I had one wooden slat and several screws and washers left over.

Note: If you take your time and carefully follow the instructions, you really can build this Ikea chair. It’s just me.
