Ever since YouTube started in 2005, millennials have used the video-sharing channel as a trendsetter and a way to express themselves and their beliefs.

Now, it seems like one thing has become quite common in the last five years.DIY, or do-it-yourself, has exploded recently with new creative items coming out in stores, from rubber band bracelet kits to duct tape fashion and even more elaborate jewelry kits.YouTube has gone one step further, however.YouTubers like Wengie and Nicole Skyes have shown subscribers how to make all kinds of their own items from household materials like decorations, stress balls, food and even harmless pranks. My sister, who is 10, has done seven similar projects herself. All over my school, I have seen examples of DIY repairs, accessories and even clothing. DIY is taking my generation by storm. So why has this trend become so popular? One theory relates to the fact that many millennial fashion choices are about expressing uniqueness, borrowing past trends of hair color and piercings to stand out from the crowd. The DIY trend may be a way for kids to stand out from the crowd without spending too much money or getting a permanent mark. With DIY, if you mess up, you can always start again. So, if you want to stand out from the crowd in your own unique way without marking your skin forever or having to shave your head, give DIY a try.
