Walabot gives DIY-ers X-ray vision – Geek

You know what would make DIY work a whole lot easier? If you could just see inside the walls you’re about to cut, drill, or smash into with a hammer. Well, now you can.

No, this is not an old-timey comic book gimmick like those x-ray specs you used to drool over in the back of the latest G.I. Joe that let you see the bones in your hand. A new tool from Vayyar Imaging called Walabot DIY really does let you see through your walls.

Don’t go scouring Craigslist for castoff lead vests, though. The Walabot DIY uses RF radar to create 3D images of what’s going on beneath the surface. It can spot everything from studs to pipes and wiring with ease at depths of up to four inches — whether there’s drywall or concrete in the way.

Walabot will even spot things in the wall that have nothing to do with your home’s construction, like any live rodents that have taken up residence there. Switching from the simplified default view to the raw data display makes it easy to track moving pests.

The Walabot itself is ever so slightly larger than your average Android phone, and there’s a very good reason for that. For simple handheld scanning you can sandwich the Walabot to your phone — on which you’ve loaded their mobile app. If you want a bigger, more glorious display to visualize what’s behind the wall you can hook it up to a laptop, too.

You can pick up a Walabot DIY for just under $200 right now, which is just about the same price you’d pay for a stud sensor that can detect electrical wiring… and the Walabot has so much more geeky potential. Head on over to their site and check out all the other things you could do with its RF radar imaging magic!
